There is a famous scene in the gospels where the Pharisees try to trap Jesus. In an attempt to nail him for heresy they get a lawyer to ask him which of the commandments is greatest. The thought process behind the trap is that no matter what response Jesus gives they will nail him. By making a judgement call on which commandment is best he will be degrading the others. So they put him on the spot (Matthew 22:34-40).

After the overruling of Roe vs. Wade I witnessed an avalanche of despair and frustration. One of the major points of contention was this rage over losing fundamental rights for women. The right to an abortion. Knowing what real Rights are I reached out to a number of people to try to engage in a conversation about morality. I reached out to friends, family, and I even engaged with random people on the internet. In all my discussions I put forth several scenarios and asked them what they would do if they found themselves in these situations. What I learned horrified me, but at the same time revealed a fundamental problem with our society. Below are two of those scenarios:

I stumbled upon this audio masterpiece when reading a comment in a totally unrelated forum and could not believe how immersive it was, I could not stop listening. When I looked into it I found that it was done by an independent American filmmaker and artist, Phil Dragash. From the blurb on his website it appears that he spent four years working on this project. This 48 hours long version of LOTR is read by Phil, who gives all major characters distinct personalities, and includeds ambient sound effects, and original music by Howard Shore from the feature film trilogy. This work is presented as three books with each chapter being recorded as an individual file. Originally this project was available for free on YouTube with custom painted thumbnails for each chapter. Sadly YouTube took the work down due to copyright reasons. Fortunately, someone was able to archive this labour of love in its entirety so it can be enjoyed into the future. Access the complete work at Archive.org, see links below:

Right and Wrong are diametrically opposed opposites that exist in nature. These concepts do not exist as constructs within the human mind, they are objective. Morality is entirely to do with the distinction between Right and Wrong behavior. Knowing this distinction is tantamount to having true Common Sense because the definition of Common Sense is to truly know the difference between Right and Wrong behavior.

When you are young you are dependent on others and you have few responsibilities. Therefore you do not have to spend the bulk of your time managing these responsibilities. However, as you age you increase both your independence and the number of things that you are responsible for. You want to maximize this new found independence and responsibility, and in fact I firmly believe that doing so to the best of your ability constitutes a life well lived. A current long term goal of mine is to read through many of the great works that have come out of Western Culture in chronological order. This year I have slowly been progressing through the great works of the ancient Greeks, starting with the Epics, moving on to the Drama and Lyrical works, followed by the Histories and finishing with the Philosophers. After completing the Greeks I will be moving on to the Romans and this has sparked an interest in looking into how difficult it would be to read these works in the original, Latin.

As a kid I can remember taking my experience and applying it to the adults around me. I thought most adults were boring because they did not spend their time as I did exploring the woods, hanging out with friends or playing sports all day. In fact now that I think about it this must be why we in society put so much value in professional sports. If you really think about it, professional athletes are the kids that never gave up the dream, they managed to keep playing a childrens game long after the rest of us quit. As you mature, you (should) take on more and more responsibilities and you (should) begin to make the shift of relating more to your exhausted parents than the kids that spend all day running around the neighborhood.

When given the option to choose between independence and dependence the defacto choice should be to choose independence, NOT dependence. Sadly, we (the collective American Consoomer) have that backwards. We have grown accustomed to trading away our independence, be that our privacy, personal data, or in many cases our very capacity to think independently. We trade it away for shiny new products that come with the promise of convenience. I say that last part somewhat tongue in cheek because corporations know what sells and employ a standing army of marketers who will sell you on why you need this new product or feature. If they do not get to you first then the dragnet of Youtube Tech Dorks will sell you on the idea with their latest Tech Review upload.
